Could BioMinF put minerals back in tooth enamel?A new toothpaste, created at Queen Mary, University of London could be the answer to keeping your patients’ teeth better for longer. The new product, BioMinF, not only helps to prevent decay it claims to put lost minerals back in tooth enamel. Distribution of tooth-hardening paste is set to be rolled out by the end of the year in the UK.

The BioMinF’s ingredients, act to repair tooth decay in people’s sleep and should also decrease sensitivity. The paste works by slowly releasing phosphate, calcium and fluoride ions that form a fluorapatite mineral over eight – 12 hours. The fluorapatite mineral acts to strengthen, protect and rebuild the structure of the teeth.

“Using remineralising toothpaste makes teeth far more resistant to attack from acidic soft drinks like fruit juices and sodas. It is also much more effective than conventional toothpastes where the active ingredients, such as soluble fluoride, are washed away and become ineffective less than two hours after brushing,” said Professor Robert Hill from Queen Mary, University of London who led the research and is the university’s chair of dental physical sciences.

“This breakthrough innovation could significantly reduce dental decay and also tooth sensitivity problems which are often experienced by people eating or drinking something cold,” said Prof Hill.

“The technology behind BioMin is not however exclusively designed for toothpastes,” added Professor Hill. “It can also be incorporated in other professionally applied dental products such as cleaning and polishing pastes, varnishes and remineralising filling materials.”
