Gameology

A love of board games inspired Dr John Khamtanh of Dentist By The Park in Bentleigh, Victoria, to found Gameology and dominate the Australian market.

“When I started Gameology seven years ago, my plan was that the business would become Australia’s largest board game warehouse. We achieved that and now are looking at expanding into New Zealand. I started out by selling games online from my garage. I met a few other people in the industry and we joined together to grow the company. At present we’re in three locations—our warehouse, our office and our retail store—and have 30 people on staff.

“When I was studying dentistry at Griffith University in Queensland, the hours were ridiculous. The only free time I had was late at night and on weekends. That’s why I decided to start selling online. I was one of the first people to import party games into Australia. They became really popular and it was my first business success.

“The COVID lockdowns saw a big surge in game sales that seems to have reignited interest in board games. There’s a large, passionate following of players out there. We’ve expanded the business to include trading cards, collectibles, puzzles, miniatures and role-playing games.

“I work full-time as a dentist and Gameology takes up most of my spare time. I rely on our team to handle the day-to-day running of the business. I tend to look after issues that aren’t time sensitive, working at night and on weekends. There’s a lot on my plate.

“I still enjoy playing board games and we hold a games and pizza night once a week with all our staff. I like a lot of different games such as Wingspan and Codenames. They have great gameplay and new players can pick up the rules quickly. My favourite game is The Settlers of Catan. It’s been around for years with a lot of different editions released. It’s one of our big sellers, too.

“With so much of our lives taking place online, particularly with social media, board games give everyone a chance to get together and reconnect. It’s a bit of a throwback to childhood when we would have those Monopoly marathons on rainy days.

“Board games are fun, competitive and you get to hang out with your friends. Running Gameology gives me great satisfaction and a sense of achievement. We’re Australia’s number one board game warehouse and that makes me proud. Along with dentistry, it’s the other passion in my life.”
