Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon and Greens Health Spokesperson Senator Richard Di Natale have this week acknowledged receipt of the interim report on dental health reform options from the independent National Advisory Council on Dental Health.

The National Advisory Council on Dental Health, headed by former senior public servant Ms Mary Murnane, was established on 5 September 2011 to provide expert advice on dental health issues, including to look at the current mix and coverage of dental services in order to provide advice on future needs and priorities for future reform.

“The council will look at how to improve services to ensure that Australians have access to high quality, cost effective dental services,” Ms Roxon said upon announcing its formation.

Senator Di Natale said that the council will play a key role in providing advice on future dental policy.

The interim report will now be considered and further discussions with the Council will follow before the report is finalised by the Council.

Minister Roxon and Senator Di Natale thanked the Council members for their time in preparing the interim report and look forward to continuing to work with the Council in the future.

Given the report is interim in nature, the Minister has clarified the report will not be publicly released. However, the final report will be issued in due course.

Establishing the National Advisory Council on Dental Health was part of a $53.1 million Gillard Government boost to dental services announced in the 2011 budget. In addition to establishing the Council, the Government is funding a voluntary dental internship program for 150 interns to consolidate and expand dental graduates’ basic skills and improve community access to dental services.
