Dr Karen Luxford appointed CEO of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons

The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) has appointed Dr Karen Luxford as its new chief executive officer.

Dr Luxford joins the College from the Clinical Excellence Commission where as executive director she has led strategic approaches to improving quality and safety in health care. Dr Luxford comes to the role with more than 20 years of experience in executive leadership in health, strategic planning, governance, stakeholder and government relations, professional standards, research, communication strategies and media. Dr Luxford has worked closely with a broad range of professional colleges throughout her career, led nation-wide education programs and held leadership roles in national health associations, leading strategy resulting in business growth.

Dr Luxford has held a range of senior executive leadership roles in health including general manager of the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre. Dr Luxford is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and of the International Society for Quality in Health Care. Dr Luxford was a Harkness Fellow in Healthcare Policy & Practice at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA in 2008/2009. Commencing her career in medical science, Dr Luxford has focused on ‘making a difference’ in health and demonstrating leadership in working with clinicians to improve care.

On Dr Luxford’s appointment, College president Dr Patrick Russo said “Dr Luxford’s leadership will energise the RACDS and contribute to the ongoing growth of the College, its profile and membership.”

Dr Luxford said “I am greatly looking forward to progressing the strategic direction of the RACDS as it supports the important foundation of good health – quality dental care. I am delighted to be working with all the Fellows, Members, candidates and staff to ensure the College delivers professional development of the highest quality to improve care outcomes in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific.”

Dr Luxford will take up the CEO role on 5 June 2017.
