Revised professional indemnity insurance standards

revised professional indemnity insuranceThe Dental Board of Australia have published revised professional indemnity insurance (PII) standards today, affecting almost all registered dental practitioners.

The revised standards come into effect on 1 July 2016, replacing the current standards dating back to 2010.

Dentists, except students or those with non-practising registration, must be covered by professional indemnity insurance of their own arrangement or through a third-party insurer.

All eligible practitioners will need to meet the obligations of the revised standard either by the time they next renew their PII arrangements policy or by their next renewal or registration after 1 October 2016, whichever is sooner. The revised standard, however, doesn’t apply to the current cycle of renewals.

Changes centre around improvements to the clarity and workability of the standard but the revision isn’t significant, says the Dental Board of Australia.

Registration standards are reviewed periodically, usually every five years or so. For more information, contact the Dental Board of Australia on 1300 419 495 or visit their website at
