The Dental Board has released the most up-to-date statistics about the dental profession, showing a tiny increase in the number of practitioners in Australia.

In its latest newsletter (available online here), the board said at the end of March 2013 there were 19,769 registered dental practitioners throughout Australia. This is an increase of 10 practitioners since the last update was released in December 2012.

The statistics show that more than half the registered dental practitioners are based in New South Wales and Victoria (accounting for nearly 54 per cent of those registered), with the remainder in the other states and territories.

The numbers revealed there was 14,890 dentists, 1267 hygienists, 1189 prosthetists, 1135 dental therapists and 781 oral health therapists. There is also 501 dual hygienists/therapists.

These detailed statistics can be found in the About>Statistics section of the Board’s website.
