3D digital scanner

by Dr Raj Singh, Blackwood Dental, SA

This 3D digital scanner is incorporated in many procedures in our practice. We use it to create digital impressions, ranging from minor and major restorative work to implanted orthodontic work. It also greatly assists with patient education. The scans are so clear and detailed, it makes it very easy to communicate and explain the treatment in an effective manner. Moreover, it’s an excellent motivating tool for patients and other team members.

What’s good about it

I’ve used many scanners over the past few years but the Trios 3 is my favourite unit. A big advantage of this scanner is that there is minimal chair time for the patient. It takes less than a couple of minutes to get a complete scan of the mouth. With other scanners there is often a specific sequence that must be followed to create an accurate result. If you miss any of the steps, then you’ve lost data and have to start again from scratch.

The Trios 3 allows you to scan in any direction and it will successfully stitch all the images together. You don’t have to follow a particular protocol as the unit doesn’t lose track. Every second, it takes thousands of pictures while constantly updating the model. This scanner uses an artificial intelligence component to build up the 3D model as you scan.

The results are remarkably high-quality and are completed very quickly. It’s a reliable and accurate scanner that does its job efficiently while allowing you to concentrate on providing excellent care for the patient. It’s all about quality and predictability of the results for a good clinical outcome.

What’s not so good

Trios 3 has one of the smaller heads, making it relatively easy to move around the patient’s mouth. If I had one wish, it would be that the head was even smaller for greater access. I suppose it’s just a matter of time until technology advances to that point.

Where did you get it
