The Airflow Prophylaxis Master enables us to deliver guided biofilm therapy, an evidence-based approach to professional dental cleaning. Rather than relying on the traditional scale and polish model, this protocol focuses on the identification, visualisation and targeted removal of dental biofilm. By prioritising biofilm management, we can clean precisely and gently, using the least invasive instruments necessary. This results in a more comfortable experience for patients, improved clinical outcomes, as well as improving long-term oral health maintenance.
What’s good about it?
It’s minimally invasive, very effective, and extremely comfortable for patients, particularly those who have sensitive teeth. Many of them describe it as feeling like a spa treatment for their mouth. The use of warm water makes a noticeable difference and helps minimise sensitivity during the clean.
We use the Prophylaxis Master routinely as part of our six-monthly check-ups and cleans. It removes extrinsic staining and biofilm efficiently without the need for gritty polishing pastes. The combination of air, powder and water is gentle on teeth with no risk of damage to enamel or restorations when used correctly. I only need to reach for a scaler when there’s a significant amount of calculus present.
The major benefit clinically is how clearly it removes biofilm. It is a great tool for patient education, allowing us to show patients exactly where plaque tends to accumulate and reinforce oral hygiene advice.
The procedure is well contained and creates little mess around the mouth, provided good suction is used by the dental assistant.
From a practice perspective, it’s been a great investment. Patients actively look forward to their check-ups because of the experience. They consistently comment on the clean, fresh feeling afterwards. We’ve been using the unit for around 18 months and haven’t experienced any technical issues during that time.
What’s not so good?
The unit does require thorough cleaning and routine maintenance between patients to ensure optimal performance. If this is not done carefully, the powder can clump within the system, which may affect efficiency.
