dual cured composite

by Dr Eric Yeung, Orion’s Dental, Lilydale, VIC

Bulk EZ Plus is a dual cured composite that’s easy to place and has an unlimited cure depth. It has a range of indications including core build-ups, cavity liner, and class one and class two cavities for posterior teeth.

What’s good about it

It’s fast and easy to use with a very low shrinkage rate and only takes 90 seconds to self-cure. There is a minimal risk of postoperative sensitivity as the composite shrinks towards the tooth instead of the curing light. It also contains zirconia filler particles that gives it high strength and wear resistance. It’s not translucent and for aesthetic reasons, I wouldn’t use it on anterior teeth. If there’s a high aesthetic demand with a posterior tooth, I use Bulk EZ Plus as a base and layer some packable composite resin over the top.

It doesn’t come in a wide range of shades but the A1, A2, A3 and Core White are suitable for most posterior teeth. It’s a flowable material that fills crevices and corners with minimal gaps and microleakage. As long as the dispensing tip is kept within the material during application, there shouldn’t be any air bubbles or voids.

I’ve been using Bulk EZ Plus for around three years. It’s my go-to for large fillings and core build-ups because of its unlimited cure depth. It is also radio-opaque when you take an X-ray and can be seen clearly on bite wings.

What’s not so good

A dispensing tip must be attached over the syringe and there are only a few tips in each packet. These dispensing tips are only single-use. Any material left in the tip will self-cure and render the tip useless. If a patient requires multiple fillings, I may use multiple dispensing tips. I’ve found that once I’ve exhausted the tips, sometimes there’s more material left in the syringe. Consequently, purchasing more dispensing tips may be necessary.
