The Gemini Evo is the latest version of Ultradent’s Gemini laser. It’s packed with more technology and is simply a more efficient diode laser.
What’s good about it
It’s a super-pulsed laser with dual wavelengths of 810 nanometers and 980 nanometers. The 810-nanometer wavelength is absorbed more readily into pigmented tissue and designed for optimal coagulation. The 980-nanometer wavelength is designed for optimal ablation. Both wavelengths can be used together as an effective combination.
Being a diode laser, many people ask me about doing gingivectomy procedures with the Gemini Evo but I mainly use it for photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy in general practice. The Gemini Evo has three new adaptors to aid in this particular treatment modality. In general, PBM promotes quicker healing and reduced swelling. Many of my patients have commented on the lack of discomfort experienced when using the Gemini Evo with surgical procedures. It’s also a great adjunct to traditional treatment methods for the ever-increasing presentations of TMD.
Compared to the previous generation of Gemini, it’s more efficient for ablation, coagulation and for PBM treatments. The super-pulsed nature of the Evo has a duty cycle of one to two per cent. This allows the tissue to cool for the remaining 98 per cent of time preventing overheating of the soft tissue and getting far better results and patient comfort.
For record-keeping, the Evo has a downloadable app that tracks how it is used and how often. Additionally, 16 commonly used preset modes are displayed to simplify treatment.
What’s not so good
Compared to lasers with no foot control, it can take a little more time to set up prior to use.
