The Gergis matrix is a pre-modified Tofflemire matrix designed for deep margin elevation. There are two types: #1 DME matrix and #2 DME matrix are shaped differently and used for different scenarios.
What’s good about it
The #1 DME matrix is for moderate subgingival areas. The #2 DME matrix is for deeper subgingival areas and when there is a proximal root concavity. They are simple to use as they are placed straight into the top of a Tofflemire retainer. There’s no need to cut the matrix into shape so it improves workflow efficiency, solving a common clinical problem in a simple, practical way. Additionally, they can be used for both anterior and posterior teeth.
The Gergis matrix has increased band curvature and divergence compared to other versions of DME matrix bands. This results in a better apical seal and creates a more ideal emergence profile, which is why it’s my go-to matrix for these types of cases. Essentially, when dealing with deeper areas, these bands give better, more predictable results.
What’s not so good
If you haven’t used a Gergis matrix before, it can be technique sensitive. The creator, Dr Bill Gergis, has an Instagram page with videos that show exactly how to use them. For first-timers, I’d advise watching these videos first.
