The Heine Loupelight 2 is a combination of magnification loupes—2.5X with a 420-millimetre working distance in my case—and an LED light that increases visibility in the operating field.
What’s good about it
The magnifying loupes show clear detail so they’re especially good for older dentists like me whose vision is not as good as it used to be. The LED light clearly illuminates everything during an examination or procedure, particularly compared to an operatory light. The loupes and attached light weigh less than my previous standalone loupes and provide a clear shadowless image free from distortion.
These loupes make my day less fatiguing as I can work in a more upright position with a relatively large field of view.
When I first purchased them, there was a period of adjustment until they were completely comfortable. A guide is provided so you can adjust them to your pupillary distance. It’s not difficult to do. I have a belt attachment for the battery pack that’s attached to the light by a cord.
Some dentists may choose higher magnification than 2.5X but I really like that it gives me a large field of view. When magnification increases, the field of view decreases so you end up constantly moving your head in order to keep everything centred.
What’s not so good
I’ve had these loupes for around eight years and the side-arms have been replaced as they cracked due to movement and weight of the light. I’ve also had to replace the connecting cord between the LED light and the battery a couple of times. The mPack mini battery doesn’t last a full day at maximum intensity. Ideally, you need to purchase two battery packs to get a full day’s use out of the LED light.
