The Medit i500 is a fast and accurate digital scanner that sells for a reasonable price. Since purchasing this unit, we no longer take any alginate or polyvinyl impressions.

What’s good about it

I use this scanner for everything from my crown and bridge work to implants to whitening trays. The crowns, bridges and implants all fit much better and the whole process is much quicker. It allows you to do two or three crowns at once and I’ve used it to do both lower sevens at the same time.

With polyvinyl, there’s no way you’re able to get both sides at the same time. The only time we use alginate is to create mouthguards. We also keep a record of everything that happens in the practice and this scanner allows for much better medico legal record keeping.

The process is fast! We no longer post models to Sydney or Melbourne—just five clicks of a mouse and it’s already there. Since I’ve started using the Medit, all my crowns need significantly less adjustment than they did beforehand.

Patients love that they no longer have a mouth full of impression material. An upper scan takes about a minute, a lower scan takes a bit less than that, and a bite can be recorded in 30 or 40 seconds. The detailed scans come up on the computer screen almost immediately. If part of the tooth is missing, you see it straight away and it’s less of an issue.

What’s not so good

It takes a little time to get used to interpreting the digital scans after using 3D models for so long. But once you do, you’ll never go back to the old system.
