Prior to purchasing iTero Scanner, we took impressions of teeth and made moulds, particularly for our Invisalign treatments. Now this scanner allows us to simply and quickly take a scan of the patient’s teeth.
What’s good about it
I can send the results digitally whereas in the past I had to post the physical impression. The scan is much more accurate and there are no re-takes, inaccuracies or rejected impressions. It’s also a much faster process. The electronic transfer of data means the Invisalign appliances are in hand about two weeks earlier. On top of that, the fit of the appliances is much better.
The scanner can also be used for many other procedures such as surgical planning, implants, and crown and bridgework. However, because I’m an orthodontist these are not procedures that I undertake.
Patients love the scanner as there’s no impression material placed in their mouth. This is of particular benefit if the patient has a strong gag reflex. The scan doesn’t have to be completed all in one go so patients never need to be uncomfortable.
My staff are very competent at taking scans so I’m happy to delegate the job to them. This is a great time-saver for me as it was impossible to delegate the making of impressions to anyone else. I believe that in the near future, scanners will be an integral part of orthodontic and dental practices.
What’s not so good
All scanners are expensive and purchasing one is a major investment. It does give you a return on your investment but it just takes a little time to do so.
