Tools of the trade: Ultraseal XT Hydro

Ultraseal XT Hydro is a hydrophilic pit and fissure sealant. It is extremely easy to use—simply isolate the area, etch and rinse, place the Ultraseal XT Hydro then cure for four seconds with a VALO light.

What’s good about it?

I find this to be a superior product compared to other fissure sealant brands that we have purchased in the past. I like its ease of use and the results look excellent.

The product is best placed using a specialised tip that spins the filler so there are no air bubbles present. It comes with a tiny brush to ensure the sealant fills every part of the tooth without making the bite too high. The product also has fluorescent properties so a black light can be used to check retention at the time of placement.

We mostly use it with children as a preventative measure, though we also use it with adults provided they have no caries. Patients are very happy with the results and often report back that they no longer get food stuck in their teeth.

Of course, we make sure to emphasise that even though it’s a preventative measure against caries, they still have to watch what they eat and regularly brush their teeth.

What’s not so good?

This product is slightly more expensive than others on the market but it’s certainly worth the money. You also have to separately purchase the tips that are used with the sealant, as it doesn’t work as well without them.
