Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) has been announced as the Gold Winner of the International Hospital Federation (IHF)/Dr Kwang Tae Kim Grand Award in the 2018 IHF Awards.

The award celebrates and recognises demonstrable excellence, innovations and outstanding achievements in the healthcare industry around the world.

DHSV was recognised for the ‘Value-based healthcare: a new approach to improve oral health outcomes’ initiative.

As the lead public oral health agency in Victoria, DHSV is transitioning to a model of care that reflects the principles of value-based health care (VBHC) and is co-designed in partnership with consumers and staff to drive better health outcomes.

“We are thrilled that our work towards introducing value-based oral healthcare was recognised as the Gold Winner of the International Hospital Federation (IHF)/Dr Kwang Tae Kim Grand Award in the 2018 IHF Awards,” DHSV CEO Dr Deborah Cole said.

“We look forward to continuing to share our experiences with the health community and learning from other innovations in this space.”

DHSV’s move to VBHC focuses on prevention and early intervention to assist in reducing the number of preventable hospital admissions caused by dental conditions. The aim is to improve the health outcomes that matter to people in a cost-effective way.

“VBHC in the oral health sector is a massive step towards reducing the overwhelming burden of oral disease, particularly for vulnerable groups and those experiencing disadvantage” Dr Cole said.

The awards attracted 160 entries from 118 organisations in 33 countries. Australian healthcare organisations received nine out of a total 27 awards from 12 countries and Australia featured in three of the four award categories.

Winners of the Gold Awards presented their winning projects at the recent World Hospital Congress held in Brisbane.
