Why choosing DAPA for training delivers practical benefits for your practice

For dentists and practice managers, training is not simply about enrolling a dental assistant (DA) in a qualification. It is an investment in capability, confidence, and retention. The right training partner must understand the realities of a busy dental surgery and help translate learning into workplace performance.

Why DAPA?

As Australia’s national professional association for dental assistants and a Registered Training Organisation (RTO 90424), DAPA has supported the profession for over 70 years and delivered RTO-accredited training since 2004.

That history matters. DAPA is not a generalist provider. Our trainers and assessors are experienced dental industry specialists whose connection across practices keeps training grounded in current clinical reality. Our completion rate sits above 85%, reflecting the practical support provided to both learners and employers.

Every learner receives student membership, connecting them to a broader professional community, industry specialists, and ongoing networking rather than a standalone qualification.

We love working with dental practices because the best outcomes come from a genuine partnership between the learner, employer, and training team. Our goal is to help practices build capable people, strengthen teams, and create rewarding careers for DAs.

Certificate III: Building Practice Capability

The HLT35021 Certificate III in Dental Assisting provides the foundation for a capable DA. Training covers chairside assisting, infection prevention and control (IPC), processing reusable medical devices, dental radiography assistance, workplace safety, and practice administration.

Learning is flexible but strongly workplace-based. Students complete at least 350 hours of practical experience, maintain a clinical competency logbook, and receive at least two scheduled workplace assessment visits from DAPA trainers, ensuring skills are verified where they matter most.

A Career Journey: Certificate III to IV

We encourage practices to view Certificate III as the start of a career pathway, not the finish line. The HLT45021 Certificate IV in Dental Assisting builds advanced capability in radiography and dental technology – including radiation safety, prescribed dental imaging, thermoformed appliances, and digital dental design.

My career has taken leaps and bounds since certification. I am now Head of Dental Operations.

Chris, DAPA Graduate

The NSW Funding Pathway

For eligible NSW practices, government funding can cover up to 100% of training costs, including fee-free traineeships. DAPA works directly with Training Services NSW to confirm subsidised pathways before enrolment, strengthening retention and succession planning without financial burden.

Custom IPC & Team Training

Beyond formal qualifications, DAPA delivers practical IPC training tailored to practice workflows, equipment, and compliance responsibilities. We also design customised group training covering onboarding, communication, clinical workflows, and leadership development for senior DAs. We listen first, then build training around your goals.

Shaping the Future of Dental Assisting

With Certificate III and IV currently under national review, DAPA is playing an active role in shaping their redesign. We ensure qualifications evolve alongside the oral health sector to continue supporting the practices that employ DAs.
